Average order value: benchmarks and better baskets

Average order value is revenue divided by orders. Compare a five-brand Indian sample with dated public data, then build baskets that leave more contribution.

Average order value is revenue divided by orders. A good basket leaves more contribution after product, delivery and acquisition costs. Our five-brand Indian D2C store sample recorded ₹3,472 net revenue per order across 21,953 orders from 8 April to 5 November 2026.

Use that reading as a reference for basket economics. Set your own target from product prices and contribution, then test whether a larger basket earns more from the traffic you already buy.

The public comparison is Triple Whale’s Meta report, published 17 August 2026. Its international, channel-attributed figure remains in dollars. Use it to understand the type of basket behind an ad benchmark; use the rupee store measure for your own order economics.

Method note: the agency reading divides ₹7,62,28,107.72 reported net revenue by 21,953 reported orders. We pool observed India-store INR rows across 859 store-days, with varied brand coverage. The revenue field applies refund and void exclusions. This measure differs from Shopify Analytics AOV, which uses product revenue before post-order adjustments.

The brand range is wide because the products and prices differ. Start your comparison with a similar purchase. A replenishment basket and an occasional premium purchase deserve different offers and different acquisition ceilings.

Average order value meaning: choose the revenue field

AOV answers how much revenue an order brings on average. The revenue field determines which version of that question the report answers. Product sales after discounts, total checkout value and net revenue after adjustments can all produce different readings.

Shopify’s sales-report documentation defines Analytics AOV as gross sales less discounts divided by orders, excluding post-order adjustments such as edits and exchanges. Use that definition when discussing Shopify Analytics with the team.

For cash and contribution planning, inspect the order’s later outcomes as well. Refunds, failed delivery and payment collection can change what a placed basket leaves. Keep the revenue view and the order cohort labelled so operations and growth can reconcile their reports.

A founder should be able to trace the headline back to the export. Write the store, currency, date range and revenue column beside the result. Keep that note when the calculation moves into a deck or budget sheet. This removes avoidable arguments about two correctly calculated but differently defined numbers.

How to calculate average order value

Use the same cohort for both sides of the calculation. Revenue from every channel divided by only online-store orders mixes two scopes. Filter the revenue and orders together before calculating the result.

  1. Choose the store and period. Record the order-creation dates and the reporting currency.
  2. Choose the revenue basis. State how discounts, refunds, tax and shipping enter the figure.
  3. Choose the order filter. Keep test, unpaid and cancelled order treatment consistent with that revenue basis.
  4. Add the values, then divide. Pool revenue and order counts rather than averaging displayed daily AOVs.
  5. Save the extraction date. Later refunds and edits can change an older period’s net figures.

Worked example: ₹6 lakh of eligible revenue divided by 500 eligible orders gives ₹1,200 AOV. If a second export adds shipping revenue, reconcile that difference in the revenue column. Keep the order count and date filters unchanged while checking it.

Look at the distribution beside the mean. A small group of expensive baskets can lift AOV while ordinary shoppers continue buying the entry product. Order-value bands and units per order reveal which baskets a bundle or threshold can realistically change.

What is a good average order value for your store?

Choose a basket that makes sense for the buyer and leaves enough contribution for acquisition. Adding an unrelated item solely to lift the average can introduce friction. Pair products that solve the same shopping problem and make the value of the combination clear.

Worked example: compare the current basket with a proposed bundle using the following assumptions.

Per-order itemCurrent basketBundle
Net product revenue₹1,200₹1,500
Product cost₹480₹700
Packing, shipping and payment costs₹150₹170
Contribution before advertising₹570₹630
Acquisition cost₹400₹400
Contribution after advertising₹170₹230

The bundle increases revenue by ₹300 and contribution after ads by ₹60. That contribution change is the reason to test the offer. Keep it visible beside the larger basket headline, especially when discounting or shipping subsidies change.

Then inspect conversion at the same traffic level. A larger contribution per order can still leave less money overall if too few shoppers accept the offer. Read total contribution from the eligible traffic before extending the bundle to every visitor.

Test AOV and conversion together

Worked example: send 1,000 eligible visits to each offer with ₹8,000 in advertising spend. Use contribution before advertising from the table above. The current offer converts 2% of visits into 20 orders, leaving ₹11,400 before ads and ₹3,400 after ads. The bundle converts 1.5% into 15 orders, leaving ₹9,450 before ads and ₹1,450 after ads.

The larger basket leaves ₹1,950 less at the same ad budget. These inputs make the test decision clear: the team must preserve enough conversion to earn a useful improvement. Put that condition into the test note before launching the offer.

Keep traffic and acquisition spending comparable while assessing the result. If the creative suddenly promotes a different product, the basket mix can shift independently of the bundle. Our CTR guide helps connect the ad promise with the shopper who arrives.

How to increase average order value

Start with complementary items customers already buy together. Put the bundle near the relevant product and explain the combined use. Show the full bundle price and the saving clearly so shoppers can compare it with buying the products separately.

For a shipping threshold, inspect the basket distribution and shipping subsidy first. Choose a threshold shoppers can reach through a useful addition. Calculate the extra product contribution after paying for the subsidy. Judge completed orders and contribution alongside the headline AOV.

Use the cart to offer a relevant accessory or refill. Keep the primary purchase easy to finish. An upsell that distracts from payment can trade a valuable order for an uncertain addition. Review the cart on a phone and make the original checkout action obvious.

Keep discounts attached to a specific commercial purpose. A discount may support a bundle, clear stock or encourage a larger basket. The resulting order still needs to cover its costs. Avoid treating the discount as free because the revenue column increased.

Turn the basket target into an acquisition ceiling

Take contribution before advertising into the ROAS calculation. That tells the team what each basket can spend on acquisition while retaining the required contribution. Update the ceiling when the offer changes.

Before the next review, bring the current basket mix, offer terms and cost assumptions together. Record the proposed change and the contribution outcome that will decide it. The free benchmark review uses that evidence to prioritise the offer, creative or page work most likely to improve paid growth.

Questions from the review desk

What does average order value mean?

Average order value is revenue divided by orders. State which revenue field you use. Our agency reference is store net revenue per reported order.

How is Shopify average order value calculated?

Shopify Analytics divides gross sales less discounts by orders and excludes post-order adjustments. Keep that product-revenue measure separate from the net-revenue-per-order reference here.

How should I use average order value by industry?

Compare similar product prices and basket types using the same revenue definition. Category references help diagnose the gap; contribution per order determines whether a bigger basket is useful.

How should I increase average order value?

Test a useful bundle or complementary product and assess contribution at the same traffic level. Include the extra product cost and shipping subsidy before extending the offer.
